Though a contrast from Microsoft’s original announcements, it has now been confirmed that indie game developers will be able to self-publish on the Xbox One.
The company released the following statement:
Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We’ll have more details on the program and the timeline at gamescom in August.
In a report by Game Informer, it is noted that instead of requiring indie developers to work with an established third-party publisher or through Microsoft Game Studios, they will allow developers to manage their own release dates and pricing.
The certification process will be getting an update as well. Microsoft will be looking for terms of service violations and significant bugs instead of doing a round of extensive code checking. With this system in mind, they aim to have a 14-day turnaround process for game developers.
Microsoft has announced that more details will be available come GamesCom in August.
