EA Press Conference Highlights: The Sims 4, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Sports

EA’s GamesCom press conference today had a few exciting announcements, along with more info about the games and franchises gamers have come to love (or at least expect) from EA. You can see Tomodom’s stream of the press conference, with full reaction commentary, here.

Fans eagerly awaiting The Sims 4, expected to be released for PC sometime in 2014, might find themselves somewhat overcome by emotion: EA promises that the fourth game in the best-selling franchise will feature a more sophisticated AI that will have your Sims responding to their emotions in a more nuanced and “human” way. An example EA gave of this enhanced emotion system was a scenario in which one Sim, Andre, becomes jealous of another Sim, Ollie, who is flirting with a Sim who rejected Andre’s advances; Andre takes out his frustration by boxing. Depending upon their personalities, other Sims’ emotional reactions may have them painting or writing (or, perhaps, finding less-healthy outlets for their emotions). The official Sims 4 trailer debuted today:

EA also provided more details about the upcoming Dragon Age: Inquisition, slated for release in fall of 2014, including the move back to a more Origins-like expansive world with multiple areas to visit and explore (as opposed to the less-popular game mechanic from Dragon Age 2 of situating the majority of the game in a single region with limited visitable areas) and the previously-announced return of multiple playable races. The press conference featured a video “dev diary” talking about the Dragon Age team’s vision for the game:

And, of course, it wouldn’t be an EA press conference without plenty of info about EA’s varied sports game franchises. EA Sports UFC is set for release in spring of 2014, and EA revealed some pre-alpha footage of the upcoming game. FIFA 14 mobile, available this fall, will be free-to-play, and the full version of the game (available for PS3 Xbox 360, and PC) has a demo out on September 10. FIFA 14 promises real ball physics, improved precision movement, and PureShot. An official trailer was released today:

Overall, the press conference had exciting info for many fans — but no groundbreaking announcements.

About Bethany Quinn

A Los Angeles native, Bethany spent most of her childhood stubbornly resisting the siren call of popularity and social acceptance after becoming addicted to Pac-Man one fateful summer afternoon in 198(cough). Not long thereafter, she lucked her way into (sibling-shared) ownership of her first console, an original NES, and immediately set her mind to defeating some of its notoriously difficult games, one cheat code at a time. Now a putative adult with a day job, Bethany spends her non-working, non-gaming, non-Tomodoming time trading internet memes with her husband, Corey, and making up ridiculous nicknames for their two dogs*, Cujo and Ethel. *Possibly too small to qualify as actual "dogs."
